We live in a rapidly evolving world. Competition accelerates the pace of everything around us. Technology creates dizzying possibilities for change. Even our tradition-rich, centuries-old system of higher education now finds itself in a tumult. During such times, universities are fortunate if they have bold, pioneering spirits who relish the opportunity for innovation and push their institutions to new frontiers. Boise State University has such a faculty member, Dr. Lisa Dawley, an institutional change agent as well as a department chair who has garnered international acclaim for the Educational Technology Department…”
–Mark Wheeler, Dean of Extended Studies, Boise State University

“Dr. Dawley’s research activities are balanced among [Boyer's] four types of scholarship, a rare and desirable situation. She has creative, theory-based ideas about various aspects of enhancing learning, centering on emerging educational technologies. These ideas are instantiated and assessed within a rigorous methodological framework developed in part by synthesizing others’ research and situating her work within that intellectual context. Lisa is applying her insights by conducting design-based research in authentic settings. Further, she is disseminating her scholarship beyond a narrow community of research peers through active outreach to scholars across a range of fields, relating her findings to larger issues and challenges they face…As our society increasingly uses interactive digital media, both at work and in play, understanding the strengths and limits of these media is vital. Thus, her work is very important for the evolution and transformation of education.”
–Chris Dede, Wirth Professor of Learning Technologies, Harvard University

“Dr. Dawley has provided exceptional leadership in professional activities to the national and global community in her direct role in expanding educational opportunities for students through innovative programs in online learning…”
–Susan Patrick, President & CEO, International Association for K-12 Online Learning

“Lisa Dawley knows more about online learning in the K through 12 space than most anyone in the field. Her ability to see the big picture and to explain it to the masses is clearly evident. Her work with existing and emerging online programs and staff has most certainly added to the growth of online education as a whole. Her books and publications in the filed of online education and instructional design has contributed substantially to the knowledge base of this relatively young field. Dr. Dawley’s experience in training educators in effective online teaching techniques is exceptional and provides palpable results for her clients. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Lisa Dawley.”
Robert Letcher
, Director of High School Instruction, K12, Inc.

First, it would be easy to say that she is internationally recognized. However, that would not do Dr. Dawley justice. It is more appropriate to say that she is connected to a deep network of colleagues related to everything that is educational technology. Those that do not know her personally have read her work; those that do know her personally have sought her out and chosen to work with her because of her educational expertise, her core research agenda, and her vision…I could not offer a higher recommendation than the one I offer for Dr. Dawley.”
–Rick Ferdig, RCET Research Professor, Kent State University

“Lisa is a fantastic collaborator and scholar: together, we have worked to lead the Applied Research in Virtual Environments for Learning (ARVEL) special interest group at AERA for the past several years. Her experience, initiative, and ability to work in multiple frames – academic, instructional design, event planning, and literary (to name a few) – have been instrumental in creating capacity for this new SIG. I am proud to call Lisa a colleague and would leap at the opportunity to work with her on future projects. I recommend her with the highest personal and professional regard.”

“I chose BSU as a graduate school because their EdTech program has a reputation for innovation and creativity. Because Dr. Dawley was the Department Chair and my Academic Advisor, it became clear that this reputation is due in great part to her leadership and passion for our field. “I know Dr. Lisa Dawley as chair of the academic department where I adjunct, as a colleague and consultant in my professional role as Distance Education Faculty Development Coordinator for the university, as teacher of a course I took from her a few years ago, and as designer of the graduate course I teach and author of one of the textbooks I use. Lisa has many exceptional strengths. As a teacher and author, she excels in relating theories, teaching tools, and methods to each other and to practice. The textbook she wrote is consistently the favorite in the graduate class I teach. As a leader, she is energetic, open to new ideas, creative, and thinks outside the box. I’m a graduate student and graduate assistant at Boise State University. I’m enrolled in Dr. Dawley’s Edtech512 Online Course Design class this Fall, 2009. Not only am I in the class, but I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Dr. Dawley in person here in South Korea recently when she did two Keynote talks at the country’s leading education universities.

The course I am currently enrolled in is one of the most challenging, but enjoyable courses I’ve ever taken. Not only have I learned to create online courses that are grounded in current research and theoretical perspectives, but I’ve also learned a great number of skills that I’ve been putting to use immediately in my own teaching of ESL at the University level in South Korea (i.e.,

Through Dr. Dawley’s teachings and leadership, as well as the many other dedicated and highly skilled professors at Boise State, I feel confident that I made the right decision when choosing Boise State University for my Edtech Masters degree.
